Neil says:
I have been a resident of Brighton for most of my life. My long love affair with writing grew from my interest and participation in the theatre. I look back to my acting career with great affection appearing with the Friends Centre Drama Group, St. Peter’s Players, Centrestage and the Myra Stewart Players. More Information.
During this period I was also secretary of the Sussex Playwrights’ Club. The highlight of this was an evening I organised spent with the National Theatre where we posed the question, “What do they look for in a new play?” More Information.

I later worked as a freelance broadcaster for Radio Brighton, one of the pioneer local radio station that was set up at that time. Under the direction of Keith Slade, I presented features and reviewed local productions. One of the many celebrities I worked with was Flora Robson.
There followed a complete change of direction, I got married to Tina in June of 1970 and we had four great children. All this time I had been working locally as a Paper Merchant with Southern Paper and I began to move up the company ladder, becoming a director in 1980. The owner Alan Ravan sold the business in 1986 to Bunzl and we joined the already successful Bunzl Fine Paper Group. Unfortunately, Alan had a stroke and he had to retire from the business so I became Managing Director. Alan is alive and well, and we go on yearly reunions with all the other senior guys. Ten years later I had moved the business along and it was time to take early retirement – I was slightly pushed, but that’s another story – and I reverted to my earlier love – writing.
Several short stories later and I completed my first novel – GOING FOR BROKE – a story following the fortunes of a printer and his father. I had joined the Brighton Novelists and I quickly learnt some of the pitfalls to avoid. After a lot of editing, I duly published the novel with the help of Jonathan Cunningham and Andrew McBride.
Things might seem to have come full circle. All those years ago I reviewed plays for BBC Radio Brighton. Now I sometimes become a community critic for the Chichester Festival Theatre.
